No, not at all. Incorrect answers should always be corrected, commented on and, when it’s obvious the person answering didn’t understand the question or put any real effort into the answer, downvoted.

Perhaps you have never experienced this situation, but in my experience, comments and corrections on incorrect answers tend to take a much more personal, insulting tone than if the intent was truly to provide a better answer. That’s what I was talking about avoiding.

No one person can know the answer to every question, so communities like SO are incredibly valuable…but, like everywhere else on the Internet, it has a tendency to stray from that value in the comments.
